In September 1939 war was declared between Britain and Germany, World War Two had begun. For the first year nothing happened. Well, that’s not strictly true, nothing much happened in Britain, but in Europe and at sea, the war raged on and became more brutal every day, but in Britain, nothing happened and it was called ‘the phoney war’ There were changes of course, food began going on ration, and gas masks now had to be carried everywhere. The sirens sounded often, but they were all just false alarms or perhaps the sirens were being tested. Other than these minor inconveniences, life went on pretty much as usual. People went to work and children went to school. Most people had no real concept of war. War was just a word. It was something that was happening in Europe, surely it would never reach Britain. But Lilian still remembered the First World War, the war that the government said was the war to end all wars. But here they were again, just twenty years later once again at war with Germany. With her husband away fighting inNorth Africa, Lilian was left to bring up their ten children alone and together they would have to face whatever lay ahead. Then came the day that war finally came to Britain. Now it was no longer ‘the phoney war’. This was war, the real war had finally begun. The death and destruction were now real. It was a fact of life, and life would never be the same.
